The Kogi Living School

  • Pueblo Bello, Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Colombia (map)

“The priority of the Kogi people is to recuperate our ancestral territory. In our territory is our identity, language, knowledge, all that makes us one with nature. For this reason, our mamos, sabios, ancestors, and creator mandated us to conserve, protect, and defend the Sierra, the heart of the world.” The Kogi are the last surviving civilization from the world of the Inca and Aztecs.

Their cities lie untouched, deep in the jungle of the world’s highest coastal mountains, an area nicknamed “hell” by local Colombian authorities and cocaine farmers alike. Although they don’t have the wheel or writing, they are unbelievably culturally advanced. They show an astuteness and understanding of human nature that is baffling. But, their knowledge is even more profound in the environment and the ecosystem they inhabit.
